A hydrocele is similar to an inguinal hernia in boys except only fluid is found in the swelling, no bowel or abdominal content. This results in swelling extending from the scrotum up toward the groin. The size of the hydrocele/swelling might fluctuate during the day. Hydroceles in infants may not require surgery and may resolve by themselves, this will be discussed with you at your consultation. If surgery is needed the same operation is done as for the repair of an inguinal hernia.
