Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy

Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy refers to the use of a long flexible camera inserted from the mouth down to the first part of the small intestines. It is used to both diagnose certain conditions as well as for the treatment of certain conditions. While in adults this can be performed without anaesthetic, in children the procedure is done under general anaesthetic to avoid any discomfort or distress to our child.

Examples of conditions that may require endoscopy are:

  • Gastro oesophageal reflux
  • Caustic ingestion
  • Ingestion of foreign bodies
  • Insertion of gastrostomy feeding tubes
  • Vomiting of blood
