Surgical Oncology/Tumours

A tumour is an abnormal growth of cells in the body. Paediatric surgeons are most commonly part of a larger team involved in the treatment of solid tumours. These tumours may affect any organ of the body.

Surgical oncology is a particular focus of Dr Stevens and he has received further training in the treatment of solid organ tumours in the United Kingdom at the Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Solid organ tumours most commonly treated with surgery include tumours of the:

  • Kidney - e.g. Wilm's tumour or Nephroblastoma
  • Liver - e.g. Hepatoblastoma
  • Nerve tissue - e.g. Neuroblastoma
  • Muscle tissue - e.g. Rhabdomyosarcoma
  • Other - e.g. Germ cell tumours including tumours of the ovaries and testicles

Every tumour is treated according to a specific protocol and may involve surgery, radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. Your child's treatment will be planned along with a paediatric oncologist to make sure that the best possible outcome is achieved while limiting treatment side effects.
