Laparoscopy/Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is a form of minimally invasive surgery (key-hole) that involves performing surgery through small incisions in your child's abdomen under camera vision. Paediatric surgeons have specialized equipment that allows them to perform laparoscopic surgery on smaller infants often shortly after birth. Older children are operated on with equipment similar to adults.

There are many conditions where laparoscopic surgery offers advantages over traditional open surgery. These advantages include smaller incisions with less pain and quicker postoperative recovery, as well a better cosmesis. It is however important to note that not all procedures can safely be performed laparoscopically. If your child requires surgery Dr Stevens will discuss with you if laparoscopic surgery is an option, however his main focus will always be on performing the safest operation for your child, even if this means doing an open procedure instead.
